Who better to lead the charge for a green office than those that work out of a home office. Those of us who are, do those things that blog action day is all about.
For my office, here is what I do in my everyday operation that just works.
1. First and foremost, we are home office workers. My commute takes me a total of 15 seconds. I don’t even have to go outside. And I certainly don’t have to drive anywhere.
2. I have used the the Internet for a number of years to do all my communication with my clients. I very seldom mail hard copies of anything to them. I encourage, actually I demand that we exchange documents and other information via email. Not only have I reduced my paper consumption, I have decreased by postage cost by a huge amount. And, if I need postage, I don’t even drive to the post office to get it. I use the Internet to buy my postage too.
3. I also use the Internet to communicate with others. Either by IM or video chats. In addition, I use Skype when I can. Not only has this saved me money, but it has reduced the need to have either the person I am talking to travel or for that matter, me to travel.
4. I have run a paperless office for a number of years now. Wlorking in a home office almost forces you to do so. There would be nothing worse than having a wall full of ugly file cabinets taking up room in my office. Being paperless also makes it so much easier to exchange documents with others too.
I am currently looking into using a service that will receive my mail called, Earth Class Mail. eMoms at Home also mentions this service. My only reason for not starting to use it sooner is the fact I can not get a local mail box address. Once I make some changes in my home business, I will most likely start using this service. What better way to go Green and at the same time continue to use the paperless approach.
While I know I could do more. The above is what I do to not only save time and money, but also it is a way to operate in the Green. For an even better list, go to eMoms at Home.
